IRA Savings for NC Homeowners

25C Tax Credit

• Beginning in 2023, all North Carolina homeowners will be eligible for a tax credit of up to 30% of the cost of heat pumps or heat-pump water heaters. 
• The maximum rebate for heat pumps and heat-pump water heaters is $2,000. 
• The 25C tax credit also provides a rebate of up to $600 each for other upgrades, including central air conditioners, water heaters, and furnaces with a maximum annual rebate of $1,200. 
• Home energy audits quality for a rebate of $150.
• The 25C tax credit does not have a lifetime limit. Homeowners can claim up to the maximum rebate of $3,200 every year they make eligible improvements through 2032.

High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA)

• HEEHRA provides up to 100% of the cost of electrification upgrades for low-income households and up to 50% of costs for moderate-income households.
  • Households with income less than 80% of the area median income are eligible for up to 100% coverage.
  • Households with incomes between 80–150% of the area median income are eligible for 50% coverage.
  • Households with income greater than 150% of the area median income do not qualify for the HEEHRA.
• The maximum rebate for upgrades is $14,000 per household.
• Heat pump systems are eligible for up to an $8,000 rebate.
• The HEEHRA is expected to be made available to North Carolinians in 2024.

Am I Eligible for the IRA Tax Credits and Rebates in NC?

The 25C tax credit is available to all NC homeowners, as long as the home is your primary residence, and it is an existing home that’s being improved, not a new home.

The HEEHRA is available for low- to moderate-income households only. Low-income households are defined as those with less than 80% of the area median income. Moderate-income households are defined as those with 80–150% of the area median income.
